Speech is a competitive activity for grades 7-12 sanctioned by NDHSAA in which students learn about, practice, and participate in public speaking. There are a number of speaking events in which students can compete that target communication skills and performance. Examples include interpretive events such as Storytelling and Poetry, extemporaneous events like Impromptu Speaking and Radio Broadcasting, as well as more traditional speech styles such as Persuade and Inform. Through participation in Speech, students can learn to think creatively and critically while gaining confidence and valuable communication skills. This is one of the best activities available to students today to promote college and career readiness.
